Beautiful Wedding at The Filter Building

Mariah and I designed this beautiful wedding at The Filter Building on White Rock Lake for Heather and Kristy. They were beautiful brides.

Yellow was the main theme, with hints of green and grey.   The couple had moved back to Dallas from Hawaii and they wanted to incorporate traditional lei’s, each with a special meaning, into their ceremony.  We designed a crescent shaped ceremony that faced the water creating a dramatic and natural back drop.

We utilized crisp white linen for the long head table and round guest tables and brought in lots of yellow, fresh green with minimal grey tones of Dusty Miller.  Fresh sliced lemons held their table place names with notes on their favorite places and bits of personal trivia.

Venue: The Filter Building, Caterer: Pappas Catering, Photographer: K and S Photography, Flowers: Bridal Blooms & Creations, Event Design: Bridal Blooms & Creations, Wedding Cake: Panini Bakery, DJ and Lighting: Kelly Hooper

What’s That Boutonniere All About

Worn to promote fertility and as protection against malevolent spirits, men throughout the world are draped in flowers during the wedding ceremony, from the Hawaiian maile lei to the Thai puang malai garland to the classic boutonniere.

Throughout the Middle Ages, a knight going into battle or entering a jousting tournament often donned a token ribbon, scarf, flower or pennant of his lady’s family crest over the left arm of his armor, where it was close to his heart. This is where we get the popular expression, “wearing your heart on your sleeve.” Wearing a lady’s colors was considered the epitome of chivalry since it signified that he was fighting for her specifically. Modern men have adapted this centuries-old tradition by choosing a flower from the bride’s bouquet to pin upon the left lapel of the wedding suit.

Trends – Whats Hot – Whats Not From New Mexico to Dallas to Nantucket and the Vineyard

What are the 2014 wedding trends across the country?
In Santa Fe and Albuquerque the color and texture is soft romantic and organic. Flowers in your hair are very popular. More formal is back in. Two sided buffets are loosing ground and weddings cakes are just part of your dessert menu.

In Dallas, it’s still about the big impression. First impressions are made in a big way be it with flowers or lighting. Lighting is almost taking precedence over flowers. Colors remain soft and romantic but Big. Everything is always bigger in Big D.

Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are gearing up for a big wedding season. Hydrangeas are still the most popular wedding flower. Soft summer colors used in natural outdoor settings are the thing there. We love the koozies as a wedding favor and of course the popularity of Nantucket Reds

May’s Flower of the month

May’s flower is Lily of the Valley.

It means: Return of Happiness

I have fond memories of Lily of the Valley growing wild on the roads sides and forests growing up in Connecticut.  It has a Beautiful fragrance.

It continues to be a lovely fragrant garden bulb and though it is expensive it is very popular in weddings.

Catherine Middleton had a bouquet of it when she married Prince William. So did Princess grade Kelly.

It is also in the Norwegian coat of arms for the city of Lunner.

Want the down side of this pretty little bloom –  ALL parts of the plant are highly poisonous. If ingested, even in small amounts, the plant can cause abdominal pain, vomiting and reduced heart rate. Isn’t that sweet!

Great Kings Tables

The Kings Table, also known as the head table is some what of a tradition.  But it has been modernized to a create a better atmosphere.   The idea of a single sided head table is so 1980’s. No one does this anymore.

From an event planners standpoint, anything you can do to create atmosphere and movement in your reception space is a good thing. Weighing down your ballroom with a sea of round tables is a BIG downer.  Because you know what people do when you give them a place to sit.  They sit.  That makes for a boring party.  It makes the DJ (MC) job harder to make your reception fun.  Your wedding party may not get to sit with the significants.

From a decorators stand point you want to do all you can to create a focal point in your reception space.   The main thing people want to see are the bride, the groom and the wedding cake. So surprise them by creating a focal point, in addition to your wedding cake, that WOWs them when they walk into the room.

Designing your reception with a Centered two sided head table, as your focal point, that is fully decorated definitely creates a WOW effect. You can also easily play down your other table decor, linen and chairs, if this centerpiece makes a great impact.

You can also cut costs by repurposing your bridal and bride’s maid’s bouquets as part of your Kings Table decor, add a little more like candles, blooms or petals and your done!

Maybe your guest list is small and your cake is only designed to feed 50-75 people.  No worry, put it on a High boy cocktail table with an upgraded line and then use your bridal and attendants bouquets on your head table, add a few decorative elements – done.

Put a specialty linen on your Kings table. Use chair covers or up graded chairs around your Kings table, all this will enable you to put less attention = $ on your other guest tables.

Vote NO for one sided head tables. Lets make your reception space Fun!  By creating a dramatic focal point of your reception space you will give your guests something to look at and be entertained by.

At Bridal Fashion Week, Colorful Gowns Prove They’re Here to Stay
Colorful wedding gowns may seem like a passing fad, but spring 2015 International Bridal Week in New York proved otherwise. Last year Vera Wang sent an all-black collection (for spring 2014) and an all-pink collection (for fall 2014) down the runway, and this season many designers have followed suit with a rainbow of options for the modern bride. “In the day and age of social media, there are an increasing number of brides who are driven to be different, and what better way to do that than with a beautifully hued gown,” Lori Conley, senior bridal gown buyer at David’s Bridal, told Yahoo Shine. “Color gives them the chance to step out and shine in a way that feels familiar and complimentary to them.” By Joanna Douglas, Yahoo Shine Senior Fashion and Beauty Editor
